- CFdS Mardi Gras & Valentine's Day Party
Club Français de Sacramento members celebrated both Mardi Gras and Valentine's Day on Sunday, February 14, 2010. Meeting at the Cordova Community Center, a festive meal together was enjoyed with ample time for visiting and savoring Simone Furlan's delicious crêpes for dessert. This was followed by several traditional events -- starting with the singing of both the French and the American national anthems. After an entertaining Mardi Gras costume contest, a tombola was held as a fund-raiser for future Club activities. At the end of the day, members left having had yet another opportunity to enjoy the fun and fellowship of Club Français!
- CFdS Luncheon Social
Danielle's Crêperie in Sacramento hosted 16 members of Club Français as we enjoyed a good visit and early lunch together. Events like this are planned from time to time to allow members to meet and spend time with one another outside of the sport of pétanque. On this day, the food was wonderful, the dessert's were especially delicious, and the camaraderie was magnifique!
- CFdS Friendship Tournament
We enjoyed a typical spring day (cool morning and warm afternoon) for our 2010 Friendship Tournament. This annual event provides an opportunity for our pétanque players to introduce the game to newcomers interested in learning how to play. More than forty people participated in a panaché (carrousel) competition consisting of five rounds. At the conclusion, prizes were given to the top three pointers and top three shooters based on their overall scores. Smiles and good company topped the day off!
- CFdS 6-Ball Tournament
As expected, Sunday, April 18th, dawned bright and sunny for our annual "6-Ball Tournament". Thirty (30) competitors from Club Français, and several other northern California clubs, met to challenge one another for cash and prizes at the end of the day. Just before lunch, we were treated to a special visit by member Lauro de Rojas, who had traveled from Seattle to visit with his family in Sacramento. Lauro will celebrate his 100th birthday in October and looks as spry as ever. As you'll see, we coaxed Lauro out onto the terrain to try his hand at pétanque once again. Our potluck meal, with a variety of vegetables, salads and desserts furnished by the players, was topped off by Simone Furlan's tasty Beef Bourguignon over white rice. Joyce Dugas did a fine job managing the food and beverages in Donna Klaiber's absence. Play resumed in the afternoon with the eventual concours and consolante winners celebrating over an apéritif and a chance for a final round of thanks to all those participating with us this year. We had a wonderful time!
- CFdS Keskydee Day Event
On this beautiful early Spring day, genial hosts Irène and Michael Boylson once again welcomed nearly 50 friends and Club Français members to their charming home in Mokelumne Hill. This year the weather was clear and sunny with temperatures in the low '70s ... just perfect to enjoy visiting and "alfresco" dining on the patio. Irène prepared a hearty cassoulet which was served up with salad, bread, cheese and chocolate-dipped strawberries for dessert. For those unfamiliar with the historical importance of the French miners in Mokelumne Hill during the California Gold Rush, after lunch Iréne briefly discussed their activities and the influence they still have on the local area today. After some final visiting and a few hands of belote, the day slowly wound to a close. As the last of the crowd departed, the hummingbirds returned to the feeders above the back door and Michael and Irène's lives returned to normal. All in all, it was a perfect way to spend the day ... Merci Beaucoup!
- FPUSA NW Mixed Triples Tournament
Club Français de Sacramento was pleased to host an FPUSA Northwest regional tournament on Sunday, May 16, 2010. The event was well attended with 51 participants drawn from several Northern California clubs. Seventeen 3-person teams vied for Concours prizes up to $198 per team and Consolante prizes up to $99 per team. Luckily, the changeable weather was cooperative throughout the day providing one less challenge for the players. The competition was stiff for the three qualifying games in the morning, but the effort proved well worth it. A welcomed lunch of roasted chicken, garden salad, bread, cheese and fruit fortified the players for the final rounds in the afternoon. Rested and ready, the "run-off" teams battled it out in the Concours and Consolante categories under the watchful eyes of those gathered along the terrains. The competition was fierce but friendly, ending happily with smiles and handshakes all around. After the awarding of the prize money in each category, winning teams gathered for photos and a final apéritif before heading home tired but satisfied with a day well spent. Bravo!
- CFdS Women's Doubles/Men's Doubles Tournament
What began as an opportunity for Club members to engage in a bit of friendly competition and badinage, slowly turned into an all-day marathon of pétanque on Sunday, June 13th, at the Mather Sports Center in Rancho Cordova. It was women versus women and men versus men as 16 doublettes (8 women's teams and 8 men's teams) met on this bright, sunny (and HOT!) day. The three rounds of play in the morning set the tone for the afternoon's elimination rounds and whetted everyone's appetites for the tasty potluck lunch served up by Donna Klaiber and her crew. After the luncheon meal and rest period it was into the breach once more. Round after round was played (for a total of 7 in all, I believe) before the winning women's teams and men's teams were finally determined. As usual, the festivities were capped off by a refreshing apéritif and a chance for everyone to visit a bit before heading home to shower, relax and prepare for the week ahead. Our thanks go to Kevin McGill and Reid Evans for once again providing us all with a rewarding (if somewhat sweltering) day on the terrains!
- CFdS Bastille Day Celebration
One of Club Français de Sacramento's annual highlights, our Bastille Day celebration was a great success again this year. While the weather was a little warm, we benefitted from the unusually "moderate" summer in the Sacramento-area overall. The Cordova Community Center provided a comfortable setting for the assembled members to visit and share a potluck meal together. As you can see, there was plenty of food on hand to feed the hungry attendees, and the "tombola" (raffle) once again generated a little extra revenue for the Club. As the event wound to a close, we proudly sang "La Marseillaise" and the "Star-Spangled Banner" before enjoying a little holiday cake and sharing a champagne toast to honor our cultural heritage. Vive la France!
- CFdS 2010 Emile Furlan Memorial Tournament
What a weekend we had! The weather was warm and fair, the crowd was enthusiastic and the competition was friendly but serious for the 2010 Emile Furlan Memorial Tournament in Knight's Landing. This year, there were 30 teams (90 players!) competing for cash prizes to be awarded in the Concours and Consolante categories. Saturday's rounds set the tone for the weekend -- lots of challenging game play on both decomposed granite as well as rock and gravel. After a well-deserved break for a lunch of sandwiches and fruit, it was "game on" for the balance of the afternoon. With day one completed, nearly 70 participants gathered at the Knight's Landing Community Center for a 4-course roast beef dinner capped off by a loving tribute to our "hostess with the mostest", Simone Furlan, and to the memory of her late husband, Emile. After the evening's festivities, Sunday morning dawned bright and early for the teams qualified to compete as tournament finalists. Once again, the competition was fierce until the final winners were determined late in the afternoon. After a brief break to visit and rest a bit, the participants assembled for post-event pizza, apéritif and the awarding of cash prizes to the successful team members. All in all, it was another wonderful Emile Furlan Memorial Tournament!

A great time was certainly had by all!
- CFdS NW Regional Tournament
CFdS hosted an FPUSA Northwest Regional Select Mixed Triples Tournament at the Mather Sports Center on Sunday, September 20th. Thirteen teams competed for the Concours and Consolante awards on this warm, summer day. Once again, our Director of Pétanque Kevin McGill did a professional job organizing the event while our Social Director Donna Klaiber provided an excellent lunch to keep everyone refueled and ready to play! Look at what a wonderful time we had...
- CFdS 6-Ball Tournament
On October 18, 2009, Club members met at the Mather Sports Center to enjoy an informal pétanque competition. Paying $1 per boule, players could choose to use 2, 3 or 6 boules. Balanced teams were formed by our Pétanque Director, Kevin McGill, and it was "Game On"! Lunch consisted of hamburgers barbecued on-site along with salad, cheese and fruit. The weather was perfect!
- CFdS Fête de l'Armistice Luncheon
Fair Oaks restaurant La Bohème played host to the more than 40 Club members gathering for this year's solemn Remembrance Day. The meal was excellent! It was followed by everyone singing "La Marseillaise" and then by Pamela Miramon's a cappella performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" ~ a memorable achievement. A dessert of Cherries Jubilee was accompanied by champagne ... and a toast to everyone's continued good health!
- CFdS Christmas Party at the Furlan Ranch
Joyeux Noël à tous! Our charming hostess, Simone Furlan, once again opened her home to Club members and guests for our annual Christmas celebration. A table stocked with amuse-gueules (hors d'oeuvre) whetted everyone's appetite for the holiday meal to come. Simone's delicious roast beef was accompanied by a variety of specialty dishes provided by the members. Afterwards, those attending gathered for a quick game of belote or to enjoy a sing-along with "live" holiday music performed by Gilbert Hetzel, Glen Graham and Helen McGill. What a wonderful time we had again this year! Bonne année!
- CFdS Christmas Party at the Furlan Ranch
Club Français de Sacramento members met at Simone Furlan's home to happily share their holiday spirit. Monsieur Edouard Mayoral, Conseiller élu des Français de l'ouest des États-Unis d'Amérique, spoke after dinner and then joined the assembled clubmembers in a festive sing-along and a lively spin around the living room. Vive la France!
